The Rat GUI - A beast of a designer tool

The most convenient simulation tool for magnet engineers

Los Angeles

Project Rat is a complete software package that includes everything from modelling a magnet in three dimensions to calculating its electric and magnetic properties in 3D. Rat is written in object oriented C++ with at its core the Multi-Level Fast Multipole Method algorithm (MLFMM). This makes it one of the fastest 3D tools for magnetostatic calculations available.

Not a programmer? No problem! Get started with the Rat Graphical User Interface, we have a thirty-day free trial with no obligation to buy.

Purchasing a Rat GUI License

A license to use the Rat GUI can be purchased from Little Beast Engineering by contacting us on our e-mail address. Unless requested otherwise, you will first get access to our thirty-day trial. We will send all the details for downloading the Rat GUI and getting started in a reply to your e-mail.

The Rat GUI license can be bought as a yearly subscription that costs CHF 2'500,- per year per license, excluding all applicable VAT, sales or any withholding taxes. When trying the Rat GUI during the thirty-day trial there is no obligation to buy the yearly subscription. The thirty-day trial can be converted to the yearly subscription after the receipt of payment and a signed agreement that includes the general terms and conditions and the end-user license agreement.

Our e-mail with information to get started will include copies of the General Terms and Conditions (terms) and the End-User License Agreement (EULA), and by downloading the Rat GUI (either the thirty-day trial or the yearly subscription of CHF 2'500,-) you agree to these terms and the EULA.

Whenever you decide to purchase the Rat GUI you can request a license key that allows you to activate the Rat GUI outside of the thirty-day trial period. A Rat GUI license key can be used on multiple devices and by multiple users, but only one instance/machine can be active at a time. This is the so-called floating license key model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Project Rat is a collection of C++ software tools that are specially designed for magnet engineers. Project Rat was created to help magnet engineers model magnets and calculate their electromagnetostatic properties efficiently thanks to the Multi-Level Fast Multipole Method. The heart of Project Rat is the Rat Library, which is completely open source and free of charge, always and for everyone.

The other part of Project Rat is the Rat Graphical User Interface (GUI). The Rat GUI is not open source and was made to provide convenience to users that would like to get started straightaway without any prior knowledge of C++ or Linux.

All information on software licensing for Project Rat can be found here.

According to Wikipedia "the graphical user interface (GUI) is a form of user interface that allows users to interact with electronic devices through graphical icons". The Rat GUI is a graphical interface around the Rat Library and it is part of Project Rat. The Rat GUI is closed source software.

The Rat GUI can be requested via e-mail on info@rat-gui.ch. We will reply to your e-mail with instructions on where to download the Rat GUI. This e-mail will also include copies of the General Terms and Conditions (terms) and the End-User License Agreement (EULA), and by downloading the Rat GUI (either the thirty-day trial or the purchased GUI) you agree to these terms and EULA.

The Rat GUI costs EUR 2'750,- per year per license, excluding all applicable VAT, sales or any withholding taxes.

We currently support Windows 10 or higher, and MacOS. For more information or inquiries on Linux versions, please contact us.

The Rat GUI has been tested on multiple platforms with different types of hardware, and it is not needed to have the latest hardware to be able to run the software. A summary of the hardware requirements is given in the table below, where the minimum requirements and recommended specify hardware for CPU computation only. The third column has the recommendations in case you want to use GPU acceleration, which is optional.

Hardware Minimum required Recommended Recommended for GPU acceleration
CPU Any Intel or AMD x86-64 processor* Any Intel or AMD x86-64 processor* Any Intel or AMD x86-64 processor*
Number of CPU cores Four Six Six
RAM** 8GB 16GB 16GB
GPU Any GPU Any GPU NVIDIA, compute compatibility > 6.1
GPU Memory** 2GB 4GB 8GB

*The Rat GUI uses OpenBlas for the linear algebra computations, which is suitable for both Intel and AMD processors.

**The (GPU) memory depends on the model size. The recommended (GPU) memory should work for most applications. However, for extremely large models more (GPU) memory might be required.

If you are not sure whether your hardware is compatible with our Rat GUI, you can always request a free thirty-day trial first to test the software.

Depending on GPU that is used the GPU acceleration can help to speed up calculations by 5 to 10 times.

A manual and video tutorials on how to use the Rat GUI can be found here.

You will receive an e-mail once we have released a new version of the Rat GUI. In addition, we post new releases on our news page.

Did you not receive our e-mail while you still have a valid yearly Rat GUI subscription? Please contact us.

Sadly we can not guarantee that the Rat GUI will be free of bugs, even though we always test the software extensively before publishing a new version. If you have any bug reports please e-mail them to us at info@rat-gui.ch. We will try to answer your e-mail as soon as possible, but no later than within three business days. Our business hours run from 09h00 - 17h00 (CET) on business days, excluding public holidays and weekends.

In general, we do not implement feature requests in the Rat GUI, but we might use them for future upgrades of the software. Any customization of the software, configuration of the software, training or other services fall outside of the scope of our standard customer support, but can be requested in a separate statement of work and are payable on a time and materials basis in accordance with Little Beast Engineering’s standard rate card.

The Rat Library is a collection of open source C++ libraries that allow the user to model magnets and coils and to calculate their electro- and magnetostatic properties.

The Raccoon software is currently not for sale. We use Raccoon for the purpose of our consultancy, but we are working hard on implementing transient calculations for Rat as well. If you are interested in our help with transient three-dimensional electromagnetic and thermal network simulations, please contact us at Little Beast Engineering.
